I'm a Leo. It follows that I am attracted to all things "Lion" so, not a real surprise that my favorite Christmas theme has always
been “And the Lion Shall Lay Down with the Lamb.” I’ve long wished to create an
ornament kit embodying that imagery but I’m not much of a church-goer and I didn't want to misrepresent anything from the bible so, I did a little research.
And guess what!...
There is no passage in the bible that reads, “and the lion shall
lay down with the lamb.” The saying – it turns out – is simply a handily-alliterative
shorthand version of a verse from the Book of Isaiah;
Isaiah 11:6 The wolf also
shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with
the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together;
and a little child shall lead them.
Personally, I don’t think it really matters. Because irrespective
of whether we’re talking about lions or leopards, kids or calves, this is a tableau about peace, tolerance and kindness, a picture of the strong shielding the weak. It's a symbol of hope for the best we, as humans, can achieve.
And given the challenges, pain and suffering wrought by 2020… who among us
couldn’t benefit from a little peace and kindness?
